Local Area Trail October 2016

As part of History, Geography and Science over the past month, we have been studying our local area and living things. On Thursday October 6th, we completed a trail of the local area to actively explore our local area in all three subjects. We had lots of fun while learning skills in Geography and discussing the changes that have occurred in the village over hundreds of years. We tried to identify areas from historic photos. We also looked for signs of Autumn as well as evidence of decomposing and fungi.

October 5th 2016 - Music in the classroom

Composing and performing Music - 14/06/16

In Science during the last term, we learned about sound. We then constructed our own homemade instruments. Following this, the pupils responded to a picture entitled "11am in Dublin" by composing their own music piece demonstrating sounds that might be heard on the street using their homemade instruments and the voice.

MAKING PRINTS.
5th & 6th class, under the supervision of Mrs. Lantry, recently spent an afternoon  making various prints in their Visual Arts lesson. Four print stations were set up around the classroom, so the children could experience the different kinds of print and print making techniques and also use a variety of equipment to print.

Rugby World Cup!

To celebrate the Rugby World Cup, 5th & 6th class pupils under the guidance of Mrs. Lantry completed projects on each country in the competition. Each pupil chose a country and researched it. Pupils learned about their chosen country's cities, tourist attractions, climate and food. They also put together a chart full of information about the members of the  Irish rugby team 'as Gaeilge'.

We have been very busy creating these wonderful pieces of Art and our THINK chart, which reminds us to think carefully before we speak.

Science- Materials and their properties- Absorption.
The pupils were learning about materials and their properties. As part of this topic, we discussed various properties such as flexibility, transparency, smooth/rough, resilience etc. Following this, we grouped materials according to their properties in a Venn Diagram. The pupils then designed their own experiments to test which materials had the best absorbency.

The class were then given the challenge to design and make a car that could move using magnets. Finally, the class participated in a car race to identify which car could travel fastest.

Construction in Art - 7/10/14

Over three weeks we worked on the topic 'My Dream Bedroom' in Art. We discussed the topic and then drew a picture of what it would like. During the following two weeks, our class constructed our dream bedrooms using recycled goods from home. The finished pieces included flat screen televisions, balconies, walk-in wardrobes, beanbags and luxurious fabrics.

Science - Plants and Animals

During September we were learning about plants and animals. We went on a minibeast hunt using pooters, we looked in many of the habitats that surround our school. When we returned to the class we studied the minibeasts we collected with a magnifying glass and identified them using a key. The following week, we researched more about the minibeasts and presented our facts to the class.

Computers and Coding

Matt Kelly visited our class and taught us all about computers. We looked at all of the components that are inside a computer and we learned all about the Binary Code.
