Welcome back bees and butterflies!
I am delighted to say that our Bee and Butterfly Garden has been restored, after part of it was dug up as part of the renovation work last year. The garden was restored with funding from Galway Co. Co. under the 'Community Environment Action Fund'. Every plant in the garden will benefit pollinators throughout the year. These include: echineacea, black-eyed susan, lupins, fuschia, cosmos, delphinium, aster, heathers, butterfly bush and also a large selection of herbs, such as: sage, lemon verbena, thyme, dill, fennel and spearmint. The fairies have also returned and even brought back some more friends with them! Please enjoy the garden, but I ask you not to pick the plants, as these are strictly for pollinators and also for the safety of other types of wildlife, which visit it e.g. garden birds and small mammals. Alternatively, enjoy the photos of the garden below. We are absolutely delighted to announce that we have been awarded an eighth Green Flag award! This award is for Marine Environments.
Our pupils showed that they clearly understand the importance of marine environments, the dangers they face and what we can do to save them. Thanks to everybody who made this happen, the staff, pupils, parents, Green Schools Ireland, Mark Molloy, LCDG and anyone else who was involved. We are so proud of our work to help our environment at a local, national and even international level. Here are some pics of our work on this theme including our Green Team, a beach clean-up, a mussel dissection workshop with Ross the scientist and examples of our other activities e.g. clothes and battery recycling initiatives and a visit to our local community garden to highlight the importance of pollinators: As part of this theme we also adopted a pod of dolphins off the coast of Scotland. Money raised from the adoption goes towards protecting the seas and oceans e.g. by educating fishermen on sustainable fishing methods, new technology to monitor marine wildlife and investing in eco-tourism. Click on the file below if you would like to see our Dolphin Adoption Certificate from WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature).

Fresh from our seventh Green Flag award, last year, the current Green Team in Lawrencetown N.S. is busy working towards flag number 8: Global Citizenship: Marine Environments. In this theme, we will look at how our Green Schools involvement can help benefit the marine environments around Ireland and the world.
Marine environments include, oceans, seas, estuarys and bays. These bodies of water differ from lakes and rivers because marine environments generally have high saline content (salt).
For this theme, we will look at the importance of marine environments to the world e.g. habitats for wildlife and eco-tourism. We will also look at serious problems facing them e.g. marine litter and climate change and of course, we will examine possible solutions to these threats to the greatest, largest and most spectacular eco-system on Earth.

SEVENTH HEAVEN! Huge congrats to all the staff and pupils in our school on achieving their seventh Green Flag Award from An Taisce. Mrs. McEvoy, Green School's Co-ordinator, and four members of the Green Team were presented with the award on Tuesday, 22/5/18 at a ceremony in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill.
WEEE HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!!! Lawrencetown National School has just won another award from WEEE Ireland for battery recycling. We collected 94 kgs of batteries for recycling last year. We were presented with a WEEE certificate and a free workshop for 30 pupils at the 'Rediscovery Centre' in Dublin. The centre uses waste materials to create pieces of fashion, furniture and sporting items. A huge thank you to everyone who helps collect batteries and not only have you helped the Earth but also, 'Laura Lynn', Ireland's only hospice for children. A percentage of funds raised from recycling batteries is donated to 'Laura Lynn' and we are delighted to be a part of this great campaign.
We are Eco-Rangers!
This year, we are asked to take part in a new programme from Bord na Mona called Eco-Rangers. The programme encourages pupils to become aware of and document Biodiversity in their local area through nature safaris. Of course we were delighted to take part as it was ideal to build on our Biodiversity theme. Pupils from Mrs. McEvoy's room went on a nature safari, filled out worksheets about our findings and sent them off to the Eco-Rangers. We were rewarded with badges, certificates, our work will feature on the Eco-Rangers website AND.... a photo-shoot!
The photos and accompaning article featured in the local paper, 'The Connacht Tribune' on 13/07/17. Here are some pics from the shoot.
S.E.A.I.Workshop

On Monday 17th October, Will from SEAI & Brigit's Garden, visited us and gave 3 workshops on Energy Conservation. Will gave us some very easy to remember tips on how to save Energy, such as, put on an extra jumper if you're cold, keep windows and doors shut and turn the heating down. Will also used the power of the humble spud to produce Energy!
Will's best friend Guzzler also came along to teach us about Energy Chains. Will was a brilliant facilitator and made sure everyone got involved. It was an interesting, fun day packed with games, information and interactive activities, all in the name of Energy Conservation.
More great green news! Last week we collected 7 more boxes of batteries for recycling in aid of the environment and 'The Laura Lynn Hospice'. 1,o9o kgs of clothes were collected for recycling (our largest amount ever) and we also donated over 100 euro to 'DaisyChain Chernobyl Group'.
Pictured here are Anita Deely from 'DaisyChain', Marsha and Julia from Belarus, who are staying with Anita for two weeks as part of the rest and recuperation programme and Cupid the dog!
The money collected will go towards funding days out for the children, airfare to and from Belarus and clothes for the children.

WEEE are so proud of our school.
Welcome back, one and all to another school year and what a first week we've had.
Last Wednesday, WEEE Ireland phoned to say, our school had collected 100kgs of waste batteries for recycling-the most in Galway and possibly Ireland. To mark this achievement, we were presented on September 9th by WEEE Ireland with a special certificate and prize. Minister for Climate Change, Denis Naughton also attended. RTE and Galway Bay FM were also on hand to mark this achievement by interviewing our pupils, which were later broadcast on radio and TV. Articles on our achievement will feature in local newspapers in Galway and Westmeath.
This all coincided with the launch of the first ever 'European Battery Recycling Day'. We are delighted to pledge our commitment to recycling waste batteries alongside WEEE Ireland and in doing so supporting Ireland's only children's hospice: LauraLynn.

On Thursday 19th May, we received our 6th Green Flag at an awards ceremony in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway. We are absolutely delighted to have this award and are planning a celebration in school to mark the award.
Mrs. McEvoy and pupils from The Green Team accepted the award on behalf of our Green Team, pictured here. From September 2016, we will begin work on our next flag: Global Citizenship: Energy. We will keep you posted on our progress on this theme.
