Science Term 2 2017-18
During Term 2, we were learning all about forces. We started off by discussing 'Gravity' and what we knew about it. We then went on to conduct experiments about gravity and the fact that the weight of an object does not effect how fast something falls, it is the shape of the object that has the greatest effect. From this we went on to design, make and compare paper and cardboard helicopters and identify what qualities improve the helicopter. Following this in small groups we designed and made helicopters using K'nex.
We also looked at simple machines and focused on pulleys and where we see these in our environment. Pupils then went on to make simple pulleys to lift a 500 ml carton of milk and then designed and made pulleys using K'nex. During the process pupils modified their construction to improve them.
Materials was another area we investigated. Using red cabbage as an indicator we investigated and identified if household items are acids or alkalis.
Throughout all of our experiments, we ensured that we conducted fair experiments and used a wide range of scientific skills including observing, predicting, questioning, investigating and recording and communicating.

St Bridget's Day
Today we learned about St. Bridget. We learned about her early life, that she was born in Co. Meath but spent her adult life in Co. Kildare. She was known for her generosity and kindness and that she dedicated her life to prayer and helping those less fortunate. She established monasteries in Co. Kildare and became a nun. She listened and spoke to people when they needed her. She taught people about Jesus and how he died on the cross. Her feast day is February 1st. Today we remembered and celebrated St. Bridget's feast day by making St. Bridget's Day crosses. |

Science Week 2017 with Ruth Marshall
On Monday,November 13th, Ruth Marshall visited our classroom and taught us all about the healing parts of plants. We made a mixture of garlic and honey and another mixture of horseradish and apple cider vinegar. After a week, these can now be used to ease the symptoms of a cold.
We also learned facts about common plants. Please read them below.
