Return To School 2022

Dear Parents,

As school returns tomorrow we hope that all of our children and their families have had a wonderful Christmas break. We would also like to wish you all a very happy new year.

Unfortunately we have not yet won the battle with COVID and we would like to remind parents to remain vigilant of the symptoms of COVID 19 in your child/children. If a child does demonstrate any symptoms please keep them at home and contact your GP for further advice.

Our school is and has always been a very safe learning environment for our children. Each of our classrooms is fitted with a powerful HEPA filter and particulate matter is constantly monitored and expelled by a mechanical ventilation system. Much credit is due to both the school and the Lawrencetown community groups in facilitating this heating retrofit.

With so much debate and negative attention in the media regarding school reopening over the past few days, I feel that it’s important to remember that school is very happy and enjoyable place for our students at Lawrencetown NS. Not only do we endeavour to create memorable learning experiences for our pupils in 2022, we aim to do so while putting smiles on our children’s faces, maintaining their social connectedness and by providing a support network for them if ever they do need it.

We all look forward to seeing many happy faces at our school gate tomorrow as our new semester begins.

Mise me meas,
Andrew O Regan

SFI Discover Science and Maths Award Recipients 2021

Our school has received another science and maths award highlighting our passion for engaging with STEM activities. The evaluation of our schools engagement with STEM is mentioned below. Needless to say we are very proud of our students and our teachers on this fantastic achievement!

Congratulations - your school has achieved an SFI Discover Science and Maths Award. We have evaluated your Log of Evidence and we are satisfied that you have met all the criteria for the Plaque of STEM.
Your school has provided evidence of children's engagement with STEM in the following areas:
  1. Science
  2. Technology
  3. Engineering
  4. Maths
  5. STEM Showcase
"there was a rich and varied range of STEM activities engaged in during the year by all classes in your school. We enjoyed your selection of activities from Magnet Boats to Investigating Nappies, Mouseville architecture to your Grassland Bioblitz and so much more. The examples you selected indicate that inquiry and exploration as well as frequent opportunities for individual and group building and Design and Make activities are a natural part of STEM teaching and learning in your school. We loved the variety and imagination shown in the children’s own boat and rocket designs and those mouse houses. We applaud your commitment to offering multiple opportunities for the children to engage in hands on learning in STEM. Very well done to all concerned. "

Christmas Raffle Bonanza

We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to our hardworking parent’s association who have sponsored our Christmas raffle bonanza this year! Our parent's prepared hampers and donated numerous spot prizes for our lucky children this Christmas. Our children and their families were very generous in their support, and the proceeds have gone a long way in assisting the school to install a high speed WiFi system, to cope with the demands of our new i-pads.
Some of our lucky winners are pictured below.
Well done to all those who took part and congratulations to our hamper winners!!

This time is a great opportunity for children to follow their own interests and to work independently. It is also a time for children to read independently and revise skills they have learned so far this year.

Please contact teachers for advice, support and guidance.
We would love to see photographs of the children’s work and projects. We will offer praise and encouraging feedback for all efforts where appropriate. We will be asking families for help by asking you to  check if your child(ren)’s answers are correct, and that appropriate levels of effort are shown for the work being completed at home.

Please use the school email address laurencetownns@hotmail.com. Include FAO and the teachers name in the subject bar so we can access them e.g. FAO Catherine O’Donnell, FAO Marie Lantry, FAO AnnMarie Mc Evoy or FAO Davina Whiriskey.

If your child is attending Marie Lantry and you would like ideas or guidance or have any questions about how best to support them, please do not hesitate to contact Marie at the school email address.

We will continue this daily this week with more activities next week.
Thank you to everybody that supported the Shoe Box Appeal this year.

Congratulations

Congratulations to our 5th class pupil who received a 3rd place award for her essay entitled 'How Safe do we have to be on the farm' at the Eyrecourt Agricultural Show. Well done!

WEEE are so proud of our school.

Welcome back, one and all to another school year and what a first week we've had.
Last Wednesday, WEEE Ireland phoned to say, our school had collected 100kgs of waste batteries for recycling-the most in Galway and possibly Ireland. To mark this achievement, we were presented on September 9th by WEEE Ireland with a special certificate and prize. Minister for Climate Change,  Denis Naughton also attended. RTE and Galway Bay FM were also on hand to mark this achievement by interviewing our pupils, which were later broadcast on radio and TV. Articles on our achievement will feature in local newspapers in Galway and Westmeath.
This all coincided with the launch of the first ever 'European Battery Recycling Day'. We are delighted to pledge our commitment to recycling waste batteries alongside WEEE Ireland and in doing so supporting Ireland's only children's hospice: LauraLynn.

6th Class Graduation - June 24th, 2016

On Friday June 24th, a Graduation Mass was held for our 6th class pupils. Mass was celebrated by Fr. O'Byrne, we remembered the times we have shared over the past eight years and celebrated those times through prayer and music. We also looked forward to the pupils' futures in their chosen Secondary schools and beyond. Each pupil received a gift from the Parents' Association as a keepsake to remember their fellow classmates in the years ahead. Thank you to the Parents' Association who provided refreshments afterwards.
Jane recited a poem that was written to reminisce about the times that the pupils shared together and the memories they created. Following this, we watched a slide show of hundreds of photographs that were taken during the pupils' time in Lawrencetown National School.
We would like to wish our 8 sixth class pupils the very best wishes in the years ahead.

Pupils are enjoying the warm weather here in Lawrencetown N.S.

We are delighted to announce that we have received our new Green Flag and are very proud of ourselves! See our Green Schools page for more!
As you know, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising. To mark the event, our school took part in  'Proclamation Day' on 15/03/16. Fr. O'Byrne acted as MC and the event was enhanced by our talented musicians.
Pupils from 5th & 6th recalled the events of 1916 for those who attended and profiled the seven signatories of the original Proclamation. A new Proclamation for Ireland for the next 100 years was read out which was created by 5th & 6th pupils.
At the close of the ceremony, Luke Kelly, Katie Cahill and Niamh Moloney raised the Irish flag and we finished with our anthem 'Amhran na bhFiann'. The day gave us a better understanding of the events of 1916 and we were all feeling very proud of our Irish history and heritage.

A very Happy and Peaceful Easter to all our pupils, parents and to the wider school community.

Here in Lawrencetown N.S. we have really gotten into the Christmas spirit. On Monday, 21st December, 2015, the pupils and staff held a  Christmas Prayer Service. It was a lovely occasion with Fr. O' Byrne praying for blessings for everyone this Christmas.
The service helped us reflect on the true meaning of Christmastime-the birth of Jesus. Mrs. Lantry also lit 61 tea-lights, one for each of our pupils. Pupils from 1st -6th read from scripture, played and sang carols. Junior Infants dressed up as characters from the Nativity.  75th Book Launch
Thank you to everyone who turned out last Sunday, 29th November to our book launch in spite of the rain and wind. Many thanks also to Jimmy Martin ( the school's oldest living past pupil) and Grace Haverty ( our current youngest pupil), who unveiled the book. You both did a great job! Feedback about the launch and the book has been very positive. Copies of the book are still available from the school, Pardy's Shop and Salmons in Ballinasloe. Trick or Treat!

On Friday 23rd October 2015, we held a Trick or Treat Day in aid of DAISYCHAIN. Daisychain helps bring children from parts of the Ukraine and Belarus affected by the fallout from the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, to Ireland. Just two weeks in Ireland adds two years to a child's life and helps their bodies heal from radiation damage. Thanks to the kindness of pupils, parents and staff, we raised a total of 278 euros for Daisychain. Thanks to everyone who helped. Anita Deely from Daisychain spoke to us about the charity and this money will help pay for day trips, medicine, food, toys and clothing for children from Chernobyl when they come to Ireland next summer. Enjoy the pics of some of the spooky and spectacular costumes from the day.

International Prayer for Children Day.
On Monday 12th October, we held a very special prayer service for children around the world.  We said prayers, lit candles, sang hymns and each pupil had a paper heart with their name on it, to show their love and support for children around the world who need help, love and care. We also signed a poster pledging to help other children.
